Nationwide Criminal Records

    There are a lot of misconceptions about criminal records in the United States. Despite what most people think, criminal records are not always open to the public. Records maintained at a courthouse or at the jail or prison are generally open to the public. Criminal records maintained in state repositories may be open, open but with restrictions on access and use, or closed, depending on the state. Records at the FBI are closed to the public unless the subject of the record requests access or access is mandated by statute to be accessed by a regulatory licensing body.   

    Knowing this, it is easy to understand that despite the claims that you see online from companies who state that they have access to a complete and accurate “National Database of Criminal Record Information” the reality is that NO SUCH DATABASE EXISTS. Beware of any  company that claims it does. Each state and each court has it’s own unique way of recording and maintaining criminal information. For proper due diligence when performing a criminal record search, the search should be conducted not only at a state level but a county level.as well. Otherwise you risk missing something.
